15th Anniversary for the Finals of the Freeride World Tour 2010

Nissan Xtreme by Swatch, Verbier Switzerland, March 20

Verbier, Switzerland – March 11, 2010 – The suspense is growing… Who will be crowned Freeride World Champion at the Nissan Xtreme by Swatch in Verbier, March 20, at the last stage of the 2010 Freeride World Tour? Considered to be the most prestigious Freeride competition in the world, the ”Xtreme” is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year -15 years of passionate freeriding and great sports performances on the mythical Bec de Rosses.

All the former winners of the event have been invited by the organisers to be present in Verbier to mark this special occasion.

After the first three Freeride World Tour stops in Russia, France and USA, only the top eight men ski, six men snowboard, three women ski and two women snowboard are invited to the finals in Verbier They will be joined by a few selected “wild cards”, as well as the winners from the Freeride World Qualifier, Nendaz Freeride.

Julia Mancuso (USA) – Double Silver Medallist Vancouver to Compete in Verbier

Fresh from her success at the Olympics in Vancouver, Julia Mancuso will travel from the USA to participate in the event. She is without doubt one of the exciting wild cards for this year’s competition.

“Competing in the Verbier Xtreme is something that I’ve been wanting to do since I came to Verbier to participate in another event a couple of years ago. The Bec des Rosses is challenging. Last year when I was visiting in Verbier I knew it was something I wanted to conquer. Just standing at the top and looking down is exhilarating. I’ve never done a freeride competition but when I saw that the Xtreme was scheduled after our World Cup tour ended, I thought why not! It’s another way I can challenge my own skiing and free skiing has always been a passion of mine.

Growing up in Squaw, I have had so many inspirational skiers to look up to. Of course JT Holmes and Cody Townsend have helped me push my limits, and I am really in awe of everyone out there living their passion and skiing for the love of the sport.”

Nissan Xtreme by Swatch Live from Verbier

For those who want to follow the competition but cannot make it to Verbier, it is possible to view it live on the internet or on a mobile phone with internet connection.

SheJumps Into The Canyon Launches Second Season

SheJumps Into The Canyon launches second season of teaching local teens
how to ski

picture-31

ALTA, Utah-

SheJumps, a 501c3 nonprofit based in Salt Lake City, is excited to launch its second season of *(S)heJumps Into the Canyon: Empowering SLC Teens in the Wasatch. *SheJumps is working with Salt Lake City Boys & Girls Clubs to teach 20-plus teens-who wouldn’t have a chance otherwise-how to ski in four weekends this March. The program goal is to introduce them to a long-term relationship with skiing as a healthy lifestyle.

With help from SheJumps’ network of athletes such as big-mountain skiers Lynsey Dyer, Rachael Burks, Claire Smallwood, 2009 Ski Jumping World Champion and freeskier Lindsey Van, and PSIA ski instructor Vanessa Pierce, among many others, the teens will be gaining the best possible knowledge about skiing, safety on the slopes, skiing as a career, and much much more.

An added benefit of the four-daylong camps at Alta Ski Area is to offer the SheJumps “network of athletes” a chance to give back to their community and give the kids “heroes” to look up to. Last year, SheJumps brought ski magazines for the kids to look through. “No way,” said Toria O’Hearn, 16, after seeing a profile of her coach Rachael Burks in Powder magazine. “That is so awesome!”

Although the mission of SheJumps is *to increase participation of women in outdoor sports through mentorship and coaching from female outdoor athletes*, the Utah-registered nonprofit is tailoring this program to also serve male
teens. In memory or dear friend Billy Poole, SheJumps has teamed up with the Billy Poole Ski Foundation to once again offer skiing to males. The goal is to bring the joys of skiing to *all* teens and help them find their passion for skiing in their nearby mountains. Starting on March 7, 2010, (S)heJumps into the Canyon has four consecutive Sunday sessions, the last of which will be on March 28. These events draw from the tenants of both SheJumps and the Billy Poole Ski Foundation to “help kids learn to find their passion and achieve their dreams through exposure to the natural beauty of nature and the mountains.”

(S)heJumps into the Canyon is generously sponsored by Alta Ski Area, Rossignol, Alta Ski Shop, Deep Powder House, and the Billy Poole Ski Foundation. For more information, please contact SheJumps Executive Director
Claire Smallwood (claire@shejumps.org) or visit www.shejumps.org.

SheJumps is a 501c(3) non-profit organization founded in 2007. SheJumps offers programming designed to encourage women’s participation in the outdoors. Specifically, creating a network for professional and recreational
athletes, and involving them in introducing new girls and women to the outdoors through event programming.
